So, whether you’re looking to exchange vows with the 220-foot cascade as your backdrop or capture memorable moments surrounded by mist and greenery, get ready to take some notes!
Choosing the Right Time to Elope at Latourell Falls
First, you should know that this place is a hot spot. It’s no surprise—with a super easy hike to get there, it’s like a magnet for adventure-loving couples. But here’s the deal—with all that popularity comes crowds, especially during peak hours. Now, I know what you’re thinking – “But Destiny, I want my elopement to be all about us, not a bunch of tourists!” I FEEL you. That’s why I always recommend eloping at Latourell at dawn or on a weekday. Trust me, watching the sun rise over the falls with just your lover by your side is a moment you’ll never forget. And if you can swing a weekday, you’ll have the place practically to yourselves.
The good news is that Latourell Falls is a beauty year-round, so you can elope whenever it feels right. Whether you’re picturing snow on the ground or a leafy, green oasis in the summer, this place delivers. Just be prepared for a few friendly tourists to congratulate you and watch from afar.
Getting to the Falls
If you’re coming to Latourell Falls from the Portland area like I am, it’s a piece of cake. Just hop on I-84 E, and enjoy a scenic drive that’s only about 25 to 30 minutes long, depending on traffic. You’ll take either I-5 S or I-205 to get there, then merge onto I-84 E. Keep heading east for about 28 miles until you hit Exit 28 toward Bridal Veil. Once you take that exit, turn right onto Historic Columbia River Highway, and you’ll be just a few miles away from the falls in no time. The drive is straightforward and offers some stunning views along the way, so don’t forget to soak it all in!
If you’re feeling adventurous, consider taking a slightly longer scenic route on your way back by turning left out of the parking lot and staying on the Historic Columbia River Highway. You’ll pass the iconic Vista House, perched high above the Columbia River Gorge, which is definitely worth a quick stop.
Let’s talk logistics, shall we? Getting to Latourell Falls is a breeze; you don’t need to be a seasoned hiker to pull this off. There are two solid options: a quick one-mile round trip that takes you to the Lower Falls and the historic bridge that’s perfect for a few killer shots, or if you’re feeling up for an adventure, you can tackle the two-mile loop that also leads you to the breathtaking Upper Falls. It’s an accessible walk (great if you have guests joining who need more assistance) that rewards you with some serious views without making you feel like you just ran a marathon. Plus, the vibe is super chill, surrounded by nature, and you might even catch a few fellow adventurers celebrating the heck out of you getting hitched.
Finding Locations for Those Perfect Waterfall Elopement Portraits
Okay, the fun part is capturing those epic couple portraits! When you elope at Latourell Falls, you’re in for a treat because many killer photo spots await you. From the roaring falls to the greenery surrounding you, there isn’t a wrong choice. Many couples mix it up with a multi-location elopement, and honestly, why not? BTW, check out Kayla and Jamison’s multi-location Oregon elopement here! You have the massive waterfall, the historic bridge (which is now a more extensive and safer structure but still looks pretty damn cool), and endless trails that can add even more variety.
The best part is that I’ll be right there with you, guiding you to the best spots and ensuring you feel comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera. Dance in the mist, share a quiet moment on the bridge, or just goof around with each other in the beautiful scenery—it’s all up to you. I’m just here to help you get creative!
Embracing the Elements at Latourell Falls | Oregon Elopement Photographer
Embracing whatever Mother Nature throws your way will be best when choosing a waterfall elopement, at least in the PNW. This place is a vibe, whether it’s a glorious sunny day or a moody, misty afternoon. The mist from the falls can add an ethereal vibe to your photos that you can’t replicate in most places. But fair warning, standing next to those thundering falls can be loud and wet as hell, so be prepared to get a little damp—and maybe even a bit wild!
These moments are worth capturing. So, if you’re ready to dive into the adventure of a lifetime and make some unforgettable memories, fill out my inquiry form, and we’ll start planning your epic elopement. For more tips on how to elope in the Columbia River Gorge, check out my blog here.
